Tech Corner: Utilizing Disk for for Faster Restores By Casey Knudson, EAGLE Support Technician
Say you were initially running backups straight to tape but you have come into some storage space on disk and would like to utilize it so that you can do restores faster. Well, in CommVault it is relatively easy to put that disk in front of the tape without even having to create a new storage policy. First you need to setup the disk space as a magnetic library and have it accessible via CommVault. ***Before doing the following procedure run a Commserve DR Backup in the
event you encounter a problem.*** You may also want to do this procedure right before your full backups due to the fact that once you create the disk copy and try to run a job, the next backup job will be converted to a full. This is due to not having a full on that copy. Also make sure that the auxiliary copy (or copies) for this storage policy have run and have finished before doing this procedure. To start, go to the storage policy to which you want to add the disk and right click on it All Task → Create New Copy. Fill in the information for the copy making sure to set your retention also. Make sure it is a synchronous copy and not a selective copy. Once you accept this it will ask about scheduling. Select Do not schedule. Next, you will right-click on the copy you just created and select properties. Now you will notice that a primary copy check box is available. Check it and choose OK. It will warn you, asking “Are you sure you want to override the existing primary copy?” Select yes. If you have completed all your auxiliary copies for the storage policy before starting this process, you should not get the following warning:
Now you need to make sure and schedule the auxiliary copy for the old primary copy. You can do this by right-clicking on that copy, All Tasks->Schedules. When the schedule window comes up you click Add, and then choose auxiliary copy in the right pane. It will then have you populate the aux copy window by choosing the storage policy and the copy that you want to schedule. Once you have the first tab filled in, select the Job Initiation tab and choose Schedule if you want to run it at a specific time or Automatic if you want it to check every 30 minutes (if there are any jobs that need copied). That
is it. Now the backups will run
to disk first and then aux copy off to tape!
